Spring skin care: our tips for a healthy, glowing complexion

Spring is in the air, and that means it is time to freshen up your skincare routine. The warmer weather and longer days can take a toll on your skin, so it is important to adjust your products and habits to keep it looking its best.

Here are some skin-care tips to help you get started this spring:

  1. Exfoliating helps remove dead skin cells and impurities, which can clog pores and lead to breakouts. Look for a gentle exfoliator that is appropriate for your skin type and use it regularly. Remember to avoid exfoliation completely if you have a compromised skin barrier.
  2. The warmer weather means your skin will be producing more oil, so you don't need a rich moisturiser. Instead, opt for a lightweight formula that will absorb quickly and won't leave your skin feeling greasy.
  3. Sunscreen is essential for protecting your skin from the sun's harmful UV rays, which can cause premature ageing, wrinkles, and skin cancer. We recommend using not more than SPF15 when you plan to spend the day outside but also try to be sunwise by avoiding the sun altogether during its hottest period. Always wear a hat. Remember when using sunscreen to re-apply every two hours, or more often if you are sweating or swimming.
  4. Stay hydrated by drinking plenty of water. This is essential for overall health, including skin health. Water helps keep your skin plump and hydrated, which can help reduce the appearance of fine lines and wrinkles. There is no prescribed minimum amount of water per day, but be aware of your body’s needs, especially with high activity levels and if you are pregnant or nursing.
  5. Eating a healthy diet can help improve the overall appearance of your skin. In line with staying hydrated, about 20 per cent of your daily fluid should come from the foods you eat. Fruits, vegetables, and soup are some of the best food sources of fluid to help you meet this goal. Try to ensure you include a wide variety of fresh fruits, vegetables, and whole grains in your diet to ensure you get a good spread of nutrients.
  6. Limit your intake of processed foods, sugary drinks, and alcohol. These foods can contribute to inflammation and skin problems.
  7. Eat healthy fats, like avocados, nuts, and seeds. These can improve skin health.
  8. Harsh skin care products, including cleansers and scrubs, can irritate your skin and should be avoided. These can strip your skin of its natural oils and make it more susceptible to breakouts. Look for gentle, hypoallergenic, non-comedogenic products that won't clog your pores.
  9. If you have any skin concerns, such as acne, rosacea, or eczema, we recommend seeing a professional for treatment.
  10. When you're well-rested and getting enough sleep your skin has a chance to repair itself. Minimise your exposure to blue light in the evening, 2 to 3 hours before bed (that includes cell phone screens) as it can impact melatonin levels and in turn, affect your sleep.
  11. Smoking damages your skin and makes it look older. If you smoke, quitting is the best thing you can do for your skin health.
  12. Stress can take a toll on your skin, so find healthy ways to manage your stress, like exercising, doing yoga or practising meditation. Even spending some time in nature is a good antidote to a stressful day.

In terms of your skincare products and routines, here are some recommendations for lighter spring skin care:

  • Cleanser: look for a gentle slightly acidic liquid cleanser. This is less likely to upset your skin’s natural pH and the microbiome on your skin, minimising irritation, and breakouts.
  • Moisturiser: hyaluronic acid serum will give you the best hydration, if you find your skin is a little dry.
  • Go for regular facials – these can help remove dead skin cells, cleanse your pores, and improve your skin's overall appearance. Not only that, but they are also very relaxing, and it is always nice to pamper yourself.
  • If you're not happy with your current skincare routine, then maybe it is time to try a new product. There are many new and innovative products on the market, like our GF2 formulations, that can help to improve your skin's health and function.
  • Finally, be patient. It takes time to see results from a new skincare routine. If you don't see results immediately don’t get discouraged. Keep following the above tips and you are bound to eventually see an improvement.

By following these tips, you can give your skin the boost it needs to look its best in the spring. With a little care and attention, you can enjoy healthy, glowing skin all season long.
