Stop inflammageing in its tracks: here’s how to reset the clock

We all know that if we feel run down or stressed, it tends to show on our faces, whether it’s a bout of acne, rosacea flaring up or just looking a bit...old. Those breakouts or sallow-looking skin are signs of our body fighting back against internal or external stressors.

The result? Inflammation – the body’s natural response to injury or infection. And, unfortunately for our looks, that sets off a process of ageing. That’s why it’s called #inflammageing: the new buzzword in dermatology circles that describes the true reason behind premature ageing. Inflammageing is chronic, low-grade inflammation that is associated with age-related changes in the stem cells of your skin.

Acute vs chronic inflammation

There are two types of inflammation that happen in the body. Acute inflammation is a short period of intense inflammation that’s part of your body’s normal healing process. For example, when you cut your finger, there will be swelling, pain and redness as ‘help’ is rushed to the spot to start the healing process.

Chronic inflammation is when the body is constantly under stress from external factors like pollution, UV rays or the chemicals we use on our skin, or from internal stressors. Every time skin is put under stress, an unhealthy cycle of inflammation starts, and skin never gets the chance to fully repair itself. Often, skin can get stuck in this unhealthy cycle.

Inflammageing weakens the skin’s barrier function

“This is inflammageing in a nutshell: a constant, chronic, underlying inflammation of the skin that over time leads to tissue breakdown. When the skin’s structure is weakened, it breaks down the collagen and elastin in the skin and diminishes the skin’s barrier function,” explains Thoclor Labs co-founder, Dr Hennie Roos. “We’ve known for years that the same genes that are responsible for inflammation are also central in the process of ageing and disease such as diabetes and cancer. Inflammation is therefore inextricably linked to ageing and disease.”

Dr Roos cites several possible mechanisms of inflammageing:

  • The persistent production of white blood cells (designed to kill disease-forming germs) eventually damages tissues.
  • Activated immune cells lead to the production of cell messenger proteins (called cytokines) that manipulate the inflammation that eventually destroy healthy cells. Many aged tissues are probably in a chronically inflamed state.
  • Certain cytokines, like Interleuken-6 and Tissue Necrosis Factor (TNF), suppress insulin after a meal or bout of exercise. This limits the beneficial effects of insulin and is one of the main causes of inflammageing.
  • Another source of inflammageing might be harmful products released by the body’s biome, such as mouth or gut bacteria, which can leak into surrounding tissues and into the circulation, leading to chronic low-grade inflammation.
  • Alternatively, the gut biome itself might change with age so that the microbes elicit an inflammatory response.
  • Inflammageing might also be due to cellular senescence (biological ageing) that is largely due to stress. Senescent cells likely accelerate ageing because they secrete numerous proinflammatory cytokines.
  • Senescent cells accumulate to high levels in fat, particularly the belly fat of obese individuals.
  • Adaptive immunity declines with age, whereas the innate immune response undergoes more subtle changes that could result in mild overactivity.

How HOCl can neutralise inflammation

From recent publications in medical journals it is now known that a Hypochlorous solution (HOCl) suppresses and reverses inflammation in the skin, as well as in wounds. This is due to the blocking effect that HOCl has on the protein messengers that activate the gene that is responsible for inflammation, ageing and disease. HOCl also counteracts the effects of IL-6, IL-2 and IL-1beta proteins, which are raised in inflammation. When HOCl chlorinates tauramine (an amino acid) this forms tauramine chloramine, which also has a strong anti-inflammatory effect.

Plus HOCl boosts the skin’s ability to rejuvenate itself. Regularly using a HOCl product like GF2 Skin Rejuvenation will have many skin benefits: skin cells will begin to function normally - and collagen, elastin and melanin formation is normalised.

You will notice smoother, more tolerant skin with a more even tone, fewer wrinkles and better hydration. Inflammation and redness on the skin is massively reduced, which is great for sensitive skins. Due to its anti-bacterial and anti-inflammatory effect, GF2 has also been found to be beneficial in the treatment of acne, rosacea and cold sores.
