There is a particular kind of shock that goes with finding a fresh breakout in your thirties or forties. You thought you were past this. The teenage version felt awful enough at the time. To open the bathroom cabinet at thirty-eight, in the middle of a perfectly normal week, and find a sore spot on your chin - this is not what anyone signed up for.
Adult acne is more common than the beauty industry lets on. Hormonal flare-ups around your cycle, stress acne after a deadline, breakouts that arrive with a change of season or a change of skincare - all of it, normal. What is less normal, but very common, is what happens next. You reach for something strong. The benzoyl peroxide. The salicylic acid pads. The retinol you bought during lockdown. You scrub harder. And within a week the spot has settled, but your skin around it is red, dry and flaking. So you switch to a heavier moisturiser, which clogs the pore that just cleared, and the cycle starts again.
Let's look at what is actually happening when you breakout, why the strongest treatments are not always the best ones and where a quieter approach - and a particular molecule called hypochlorous acid - fits into the picture.
Why the strongest treatments often backfire
Most off-the-shelf acne treatments work by being aggressive. Benzoyl peroxide kills bacteria by oxidising them, which works, but oxidises your skin cells at the same time. Salicylic acid dissolves the gunk inside pores, which also works, but takes the protective lipid layer with it. Retinoids speed up cell turnover, which helps in the long run, but causes peeling and sun sensitivity along the way.
For some people, with some routines, these ingredients are the right tool. For many of us they are too much, used too often, on skin that is already inflamed. The result is what dermatologists sometimes call "compromised barrier" - skin that has lost its outer layer of fats and proteins and can no longer hold water in or keep irritants out.
A compromised barrier is the perfect environment for more acne. The skin overproduces oil to compensate for what it has lost. Bacteria find welcoming territory in the dry cracks. And the underlying inflammation, which is part of what was driving the breakouts to begin with, gets louder rather than quieter.
So you end up in a loop. Strong treatment, broken barrier, more breakouts, stronger treatment.
There is a quieter way to interrupt this.
What is happening when you breakout
Acne is not a hygiene problem. (Plenty of you reading this know that already, but it is worth saying because the implication persists.) A pimple forms when a pore gets blocked - usually by a mix of dead skin cells and sebum, the natural oil your skin produces. Once the pore is blocked, the bacteria that live on everyone's skin, particularly one called Cutibacterium acnes, can multiply in the sealed environment.
That alone would just give you a clogged pore. The reason it becomes a sore spot is your immune system. The bacteria multiplying in the pore trigger an inflammatory response. White blood cells rush to the area. Redness, heat, swelling and pain follow. The bigger the inflammatory response, the bigger the spot.
There are several things that crank up oil production or trigger the inflammation.
- Hormones (especially the dip in oestrogen before your period).
- Stress (cortisol bumps both oil and inflammation).
- Sleep loss.
- Sugar and refined carbohydrates.
- Occlusive products.
- Sweat sitting on the skin after a workout.
- The pillowcase that has not been changed in a fortnight.
You probably know your own triggers.
What this means is that an effective acne treatment needs to do two things: deal with the bacteria and calm the inflammation. Most harsh treatments do the first while making the second worse. The trick is to do both at once - gently.
Where hypochlorous acid comes in
Hypochlorous acid (HOCl) is a molecule your body already makes. When you cut your finger, your white blood cells produce HOCl as part of the immune response. It is one of your body's own tools for killing bacteria and calming inflammation. Rather elegant, when you stop to think about it.
What scientists have figured out is how to manufacture a stable form of this molecule outside the body. At Thoclor Labs we call our medical-grade version the “Miracle Molecule”. For acne specifically, this matters because our HOCl does both jobs at once. And just on that point, are all HOCl products as effective? To start, GF2 targets the bacteria. C. acnes can develop resistance to antibiotics, but HOCl works on multiple cellular components at once, which makes resistance much harder for the bacteria to develop. The bacterial population in the pore drops, and new breakouts have less to feed on.

And it does both without stripping the skin. Because the molecule is identical to the one your white blood cells produce, your skin recognises it as a safe substance. It does not burn, sting, dry or peel. It is gentle enough for sensitive skin and safe enough for the whole family to use.
The result is that you can use it morning and night, for as long as you need to, without the skin gradually becoming red and irritated the way it would on benzoyl peroxide.
The ritual matters
GF2 only works properly if you apply it the right way. This is the bit most people get wrong, so worth slowing down on.
- First, apply it to clean dry skin. Not over makeup, not over serum, not over a damp face after rinsing. Cleanse, pat dry, then spray.
- Second, hold the bottle about fifteen centimetres from your face and mist generously - around eight to ten pumps. The skin should feel moist but not dripping. You can do your face, neck and around your eyes.
- Third - and this is the non-negotiable bit - let it dry completely on its own. Do not rub it in. Do not wipe it off. Do not fan your face or aim a hair-dryer at it to speed things up. The HOCl molecule is only active while the skin is damp. If you cut that short, you cut the treatment short. Give it the few minutes it needs.
- Fourth, once your skin is fully dry, you can layer your usual products on top. Serum, moisturiser, mineral sunscreen in the morning. Do this morning and night, every day. If you are coming out of a workout with sweat still on your face, and you don’t have time for a shower, then rinse your face and give it a mist of GF2. It will calm any aggravation until you can get properly cleaned up. Sweat sitting on the skin is a known trigger for breakouts.
A simpler routine
We are big believers in less is more. If your skin is breaking-out and you have ten products in rotation, the answer is almost never an eleventh.
A sensible acne routine looks something like this.
- A gentle liquid cleanser, at a low pH (around 5.5), morning and night. The right pH keeps your skin's microbiome happy rather than wiping it out the way harsh cleansers do.
- GF2 after cleansing, applied as directed.
- A simple non-comedogenic moisturiser once the spray is dry.
- A broad-spectrum mineral SPF in the morning.
If you are already on a prescription retinoid or a dermatologist-prescribed treatment, GF2 sits comfortably alongside it - just allow each product to absorb before the next one goes on.
What you do not need is a clay mask, a salicylic toner, a benzoyl spot treatment, a niacinamide serum, a brightening serum and a night cream all layered on top of each other. The skin cannot process that many active ingredients, and most of them are working against each other.
Fewer ingredients, used consistently, on a routine that gives the skin time to recover. That is almost always what does it.
What to expect
Some users see visible change within a few days. Most see clear improvement after four to six weeks of consistent use, sometimes longer depending on the skin. The redness on existing spots settles, the active spots heal faster and new spots become less frequent and less inflamed.
If you have been on a heavy routine of acid exfoliants and benzoyl peroxide, you may notice your skin going through a transition period as the barrier rebuilds. This is a good thing, even if it does not feel like it for the first week or two.
